Communications minister Solly Malatsi has announced that he has secured cabinet’s support to delay South Africa ’s analogue television switch-off from December 31, 2024, to March 31, 2025. The extension aims to ensure that more indigent households can access broadcast services. Although the number of indigent households needing digital TV set-top box es stands at 467,000, Malatsi stated, the ministry has communicated the decision to broadcasters and stakeholders.

This move acknowledges the significant delays in the Broadcasting Digital Migration (BDM) project. Malatsi also directed the implementation of consequence management for any failures within the Department. He noted that the dual illumination process, which involves transmitting analogue and digital signals simultaneously, is costly and unsustainable
