South Africa's matric pass rate for 2024 reached a historic high of 87.3%, a significant increase from 2023's 82.9%, with nearly half of the candidates qualifying for Bachelor's degree programs. More than 615,000 out of 700,000 public school learners who sat for the exams successfully passed, reflecting the nation's commitment to education amidst post-pandemic challenges.
South Africa celebrated a significant achievement in education as the official matric pass rate for 2024 soared to 87.3%, marking a substantial increase from the 82.9% recorded in 2023. Basic education minister Siviwe Gwarube unveiled these impressive results during a press conference held at the Mosaïek Church in Randburg on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Over 615,000 out of the approximate 700,000 public school learners who sat for the 2024 matric examinations successfully passed, demonstrating a strong commitment to academic excellence. Adding to the celebratory mood, the Class of 2024 achieved the highest number of candidates qualifying for Bachelor's degree programs. Minister Gwarube expressed her delight, stating, “I am pleased to announce that in the class of 2024, nearly half of our learners who wrote the exams received a Bachelor pass.” She further emphasized the remarkable progress, noting, “47.8% of our candidates qualified for admission to Bachelor studies. This is a 6.9 percentage point increase from last year.”Earlier on Monday, the quality assurance body, Umalusi, reported that a total of 1,060,852 students participated in the 2024 matric exams. This cohort comprised 832,993 learners enrolled in schools administered by the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Independent Examinations Board (IEB), and the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI). Minister Gwarube highlighted the significance of this year's participation, stating, “We have seen the highest rate of learners enrolled for Grade 12 in 2024 writing the NSC exams since the start of Covid-19. The matric class of 2024, who are the reason for our gathering today, were in Grade 8. They just entered secondary education at the time when this crisis took place,” noted Deputy Minister Reginah Mhaule. Umalusi's statement also addressed concerns regarding the integrity of the final examinations, including instances of malpractice and cheating. Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi reported a decrease in reported cases of group copying within the DBE, dropping from 945 in 2023 to 407 in 2024. However, Umalusi expressed serious concern that KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga remained leading provinces in terms of implicated candidates, with 195 and 74 cases respectively.
