We spoke to composer dabneymorris about his Sundance film SometimesIThinkAboutDying, connecting with Daisy Ridley's character and resonating emotionally (and musically) with Fran's flights of fancy:
Sometimes I Think About Dying is an emotionally resonant and enjoyable film, one of a number of exciting new features that debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The journey of Sometimes I Think About Dying is an interesting one, as it is based on a short film of the same name, which itself was based on a play called Killers by Kevin Armento. The feature was well-received at its opening night premiere at Sundance, with critics praising its relatable story, smart humor, and resonant themes.
Were there a lot of people involved with the film who you hadn't had a chance to meet until you were all at Sundance? Is there something particular about the story of the film that drew you in, or that you were most excited to lend music to? I think some of that came over in the scripted voiceover, but I think a lot more of that was informed by conversations that me, and Rachel, and Brian were having, and also in Dustin Lane's absolutely brilliant cinematography and the cinematic language that he and Rachel are able to almost effortlessly put together.
You're brought into a story of a nondescript town, and it starts with these harp swells. Then, it goes into this singular line that's a harp, and this prepared guitar. In every single score [I do], I try to put my JUNO-60 in somewhere, because it's my favorite instrument. Any bass that happens in the score is a JUNO-60 bass. Then, there's some other stuff, and then there's this line that I think is very beautiful [that is] all false harmonics on the viola.
