This school year, a group of students have been learning about drones in a new class. STEM teacher Mike Kliewer teaches the course and says it’s more than just learning how to fly a drone.
Derk Leal, a student in the new class, is excited about the opportunities.The program partners with the Dee Howard Foundation, which has funded teacher training, student curriculum and the purchase of the DJI Commercial Drones.
STEM teacher Mike Kliewer teaches the course and says it’s more than just learning how to fly a drone.Christina Martinez, executive director for The Dee Howard Foundation, said they launched this program in five high schools and eight middle schools.“They’re going to need pilots to deliver packages or search and rescue,” Kliewer said.
Martinez said the program aims to equip students with the knowledge to take and pass the FAA Part 107 exam. Students who pass the exam become FAA Commercial Drone Pilots, which allows them to start working in a high-wage and high-demand job.Copyright 2023 by KSAT - All rights reserved.
