Some staff at Doncaster Sheffield Airport found out via Facebook that it was to close with the loss of around 800 jobs, it has been claimed.

Peel blamed the closure on the high costs of running an airport, adding that it was in consultation with staff. Union officials believe Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which opened in 2005 and was formerly known as Robin Hood airport, is worth £100m a year to the region’s economy. However, the decision announced on Monday still came as a shock. Ms Barnes hit out at Peel’s handling of the announcement.
