President Cyril Ramaphosa may have dismissed Sisisi Tolashe from his Cabinet, but some opposition parties are still baying for her blood. Tolashe had been facing months of allegations involving appointments in the department, and more recently, a donation of cars she appears to have given to her children. Tolashe is the second African National Congress member of Parliament to be axed from Cabinet in this administration, after the former Higher Education Minister, Nobuhle Nkabane. Ramaphosa has told the National Assembly that he doesn’t owe the public an explanation for why he finally decided to fire Tolashe.
But ActionSA’s Dereleen James questioned whether Tolashe would be held accountable for allegedly diverting aid she received during her tenure as a deputy minister, as well as whether those who benefited from the irregular appointments would pay back the money.
“Will she be charged for fraud? Will her advisor - the Ben10 - be repaying the money for that irregular appointment? Will the cousin to that advisor also be paying back the money for that appointment, Mr President? ” Ramaphosa said the Public Service Commission is the best place to handle the employment irregularities, and that he’s satisfied a credible process exists for the executive to declare gifts.
