It came as a shock to parents whose children previously attended the 65-space Building Blocks Educare’s Sutherland Avenue branch, which was recently acquired by ProducKIDvity. The owners of Building Blocks recently gave parents notice they were shutting their two locations because of issues with their lease.

She has heard from parents whose children attend Building Blocks who were in tears when they learned of the additional fees charged by ProducKIDvity. Worms said with such a shortage of suitable child-care options, parents “have no choice” but to pay the additional fees. “If families do not wish to utilize all of the add-ons, that is fine, however as a business we give priority admission to those families who wish to utilize all of our services,” co-owner Alexandra Carnio said in an email to Postmedia News.

Grace Lore, B.C.’s Minister of State for Child Care, wasn’t available for an interview but said in a statement: “Our goal is to reduce fees and make child care more affordable for families, and there are guidelines in place to ensure operators pass savings on to families.” One Langley daycare told parents in December that daily meals would now cost parents $260 a month and access to the classroom camera would cost $150 a month, services that were previously included in tuition.
