Solomon: Kelvin Sampson’s sustained success with UH basketball raises the bar for football coach Dana Holgorsen
UH coach Dana Holgorsen got the Cougars to last season’s American Athletic Conference Championship Game, where they lost 35-20 to Cincinnati. After going 7-13 in his first two seasons as head football coach at the University of Houston, Holgorsen was hardly in line for a contract extension. A buyout was more likely.
Holgorsen will make about $1 million a year more than basketball coach Kelvin Sampson, who a year ago inked a new deal that will have him at UH though the 2026-27 season. Not like Duke, where Mike Krzyzewski makes about three times the pay of new football coach Mike Elko. The Cougars actually care about football. And a good question is whether Holgorsen will bring the football program up to where Sampson has put UH basketball.
Can they do that again? And what will happen when UH moves to the Big 12 next year or the year after?A new 100,000-square-foot football operations facility will go a long way in helping UH become one of the big boys.Argue all you like about monies being spent on games, but UH is serious about athletics and starting to see the fruits of its investments.
“Houston basketball is good,” Sampson said Thursday. “It’s alive and well, and it’s not going anywhere.Sampson stopped a long line of UH coaches who were escorted out of Hofheinz Pavilion after being fired.
