Socialist hardliners in Venezuela open fire during a march headed by opposition leader Juan Guaidó, injuring a 16-year-old demonstrator. A photo provided to AP shows a masked man aiming a pistol at a group of opposition activists, including Guaidó.
In this photo released by the Juan Guaido's Press Office, an unidentified man aims a gun at a crowd as opposition leader Juan Guaido, center right in light blue shirt, meets with supporters during a rally in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020.
A photo of the confrontation provided exclusively to The Associated Press shows a masked man brandishing a pistol pointed toward a group of opposition activists, including Guaidó, who can be seen staring down the unidentified man. Ramos said worse bloodshed was avoided because the unidentified man did not open fire at that moment.
An opposition lawmaker from the region, Daniel Antequera, said the march through poor neighborhoods drew a surprisingly strong support. It lasted about an hour with the armed groups meeting them at various points, he said. They pressed on believing the gunfire was going into the air — until learning that the teen was shot.
As political turmoil has swept over Venezuela the past year, armed groups loyal to Maduro have been increasingly deployed by a government determined to resist domestic opposition and mounting international pressure, Pantoulas said.
