At about 1:20 p.m. on Monday, a 27-year-old woman told Nanaimo RCMP she was returning to work on Victoria Road when a suspect “approached her from behind, grabbed her around the neck then groped her in a sexual manner,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
The victim immediately called 911 and posted the picture on social media. Within minutes, tips began to pour in which led to a suspect being identified. Police were looped in and arrested a suspect at a nearby home without incident. Brett Ranger, 35, of no fixed address appeared in provincial court in Nanaimo and was charged with one count of sexual assault. He was remanded until April 4.
“The victim in this incident did everything correct,” said O’Brien. “She fought back, she made noise, she told someone and reported the incident to the police … a picture of the suspect was shared across social media, which ultimately led to his timely arrest.”
