Toronto finished with the 13th-worst record and a one per cent chance of winning the lottery with Victor Wembanyama the top prize.

The weighted lottery, which each year gives the 14 non-playoff teams a chance to jump up to a higher draft position, will take place in Chicago.

The three teams with the worst records in the past season have the best odds of snagging the top pick with each club assigned a 14 per cent chance of getting the proper combination of ping pong balls. The Raptors finished with the 13th worst record so they have been assigned a one per cent chance of winning the lottery. In other words, Toronto has a slightly better chance of matching three numbers on a Lotto 6/49 ticket than landing the No. 1 pick overall.

A one per cent chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick is roughly the same odds as “flipping a coin six times and getting all heads” or drawing a natural straight or better in a five-card poker game, said York University mathematics professor Tom Salisbury.“Three people each choose a number from one to 10. The probability that all three pick the same number is one per cent,” said Madras said.

The Raptors also have a 4.8 per cent chance of jumping into the top four teams for the draft in the lottery. While the chances of moving up in the draft with such long odds are slim, it’s not unheard of in NBA history.
