Driving a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X is only cheaper than a gas car if you plug in at the right places.
Tesla occasionally offers free Supercharging to new buyers near the end of the year or the end of a quarter to boost sales. In recent years, these spiffs have been limited to 1,000 miles or one year, but some Model S and Model X vehicles sold prior to January 15, 2017, came with free lifetime Supercharging that transfers to the new owner every time the car is sold. These Teslas can be hard to find and command a premium when they come up for sale.
Electric motors are so much more efficient than gas engines that an EV charged at home is almost always cheaper to run than a comparable gas vehicle. In a gas vehicle, the same figure is just 16 to 25 percent. A gas-electric hybrid powertrain can close the cost gap, but even an extremely efficient hybrid like the 57-mpg Toyota Prius is often more expensive to operate than the thriftiest Tesla Model 3.
