Winless in three straight heading into the game against the Panthers, the Senators woke up Wednesday six points behind Florida and the New York Islanders for the final wildcard spot in the East.
While there will be disappointment with missing the post-season for the sixth straight year, the Senators can look back on this season as a step in the right direction. The club wanted to play meaningful games in March and achieved its goal by making a push. The expectation is that by the end of April we’ll have a good idea who the next owner of the Senators will be and then it will take a couple of months to complete the paperwork. The league office is hopeful it will have the new group in place by July 1.
