““We didn’t play bad, I thought. A couple of bad bounces at the end, and obviously the best player took advantage,” said Flames first-liner Jonathan Huberdeau. “That’s what happened. Just have to forget about this one and focus on the next one.” With the loss, the Flames fall to 5-2 so far this season. They’ve split a pair of matchups with McDavid & Co., the guys who knocked them out of the Stanley Cup chase last spring.
That lead lasted all of 33 seconds. Still on the power-play, and after Skinner had robbed Lindholm of a second shortie, the Oilers capitalized on an odd-man rush. Hyman was credited with that lamp-lighting, although it was a sliding Noah Hanifin — trying to prevent a cross-crease feed to Leon Draisaitl — who poked the puck past his own netminder.
“It just wasn’t good enough from the whole team,” Backlund said afterward. ”We can play better than that, we know that. We were sloppy.”A year ago, it was Lindholm who rocked October for the Flames. He fired out of the gates with seven goals before the season was even two weeks old. “So far, Nazem has been great for us and won us a couple games,” he told reporters after morning skate at the Saddledome. “It’s time for myself to keep following his lead.”
