SNAPSHOTS: Flames first-rounder Honzek hopes to add to collection of Stanley Cup photos yyc

As the No. 16 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Honzek is one of the marquee attractions this week at Flames’ development camp, which runs through Saturday at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre. While the 18-year-old is likely ticketed to spend at least one more winter with the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants, this power-forward-in-progress doesn’t want to squander this opportunity to make a positive initial impression on his future employers.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of pressure and attention,” Honzek said of his status as the Flames’ latest first-round selection. “But for me, it’s still stay focused, stay humble and do the right things and don’t go off my road which I’m on right now. So just stay focused, do the right things, listen. And especially here at development camp, take as much as I can, get new things, get new information and leave from here as a better player.

“We’re just getting to know Sammy and all the guys,” stressed Ray Edwards, the Flames’ director of player development. “But when we leave here, we’ll have a good understanding of what we have to do for them. Each player, when they leave here, will have a development plan put together. The action piece is the critical part. We’ll have goals and objectives for everybody, but how we’re going to get to those goals and objectives is the key piece.

Honzek’s size — he’s currently listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 lb. — and skill will be on display this week at WinSport. He proved his hockey sense Thursday when reporters asked if, during any of those childhood photo ops, he left his fingerprints on the historic hardware.“That would be awesome,” Honzek said, imagining a championship shindig of his own. “I think it would mean a lot. Obviously, it’s everyone’s dream, but it’s all about how you are focused and prepared for it.
