The April 15 fundraiser at Jack London Square will feature a special ballet performance, a silent and live auction and more.
“She put me in all types of dance — ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, all that. But when I was around 8 or 9, I began to fall in love with just ballet. That’s when I became a little bit more serious and started moving away from the other types of dance styles. I began training more professionally and went to a dance school in San Jose where they just focused on ballet. From there, I started dancing in San Francisco. And I’ve been moving a lot for dance ever since — first L.A.
“I also love the journey that ballet has taken me to where I am today because it is physically impossible to be perfect. You see someone dancing on an Instagram video, and you’re like, ‘Oh, she’s perfect,’ but they didn’t just get there. You have to work for years and years, eight to 10 hours a day or even more. I still enjoy the work in progress every day. In rehearsal I’m constantly correcting myself. I strive for perfection, even though I know I won’t get there.
There will also be a silent and live auction, a special ballet performance and a chance to show off your own skills on the dance floor. Tickets are $200 and up, but it’s all for a great cause: spreading the joy of professional dance throughout Oakland, especially among many traditionally underserved communities.
