KwaZulu-Natal experiences an increase in snake encounters as reptiles seek shelter and food due to heavy rains. Snake catcher Nick Evans shares his experience of rescuing two snakes from a home in Westville. This surge in sightings is attributed to the rainy season and the hatching of baby snakes. The Limpopo Department of Health also reports a temporary closure of a clinic due to a large snake sighting, emphasizing the widespread presence of snakes during this time.
KwaZulu-Natal is experiencing a surge in snake encounters as these reptiles seek shelter and food amidst heavy rains . Nick Evans, a well-known snake catcher , recently documented one such incident on his Facebook page. He received a call from a friend in Westville whose home office was invaded by a dark-colored snake, roughly a meter long, which fell from a bookshelf. During the rescue operation, Evans discovered another snake, potentially a cobra or mamba, inside an open bathroom cabinet.
Evans emphasized the importance of caution during snake season, noting that while snakebites are common, fatalities are rare. The heavy rainfall has increased the number of snake sightings, as reptiles seek refuge and food sources. Furthermore, baby snakes are beginning to hatch, adding to the prevalence of these encounters. Evans urges residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid contact with snakes, and contact snake catchers for assistance. This increase in snake sightings is not limited to KwaZulu-Natal. Last month, the Limpopo Department of Health was forced to temporarily close Mogoto Clinic in Zebediela due to a large snake being sighted on the property. The department prioritized the safety of both staff and patients by deploying snake catchers to the site. This incident highlights the widespread presence of snakes and the need for vigilance during this time of year.
