Going commando...

Warning! Spoilers ahead for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #301Larry Hama is bringing the classic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero back thanks to Skybound Entertainment, and he’s bringing the original Snake Eyes with him. But this time, the character will be donning his classic “commando” outfit, a choice that may prove controversial to some fans.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The godfather of all things G.I. Joe, Larry Hama was instrumental in developing Hasbro’s fledging action figure line. In addition to writing the file cards for the figures, Hama also wrote the Marvel Comics tie-in book from 1982 to 1994. In 2012, Hama returned to the original series, continuing the story for another 145 issues under IDW Publishing. That series came to a conclusion with the publication of last year’s G.I.

“Commando” Snake Eyes Returns to G.I. Joe The preview picks up where #300 left off, continuing the story from a cliffhanger ending that saw Joe team members Duke and Wild Bill about to crash a C-130 into the new casino opened on Cobra Island. It contains all the classic hallmarks of Hama’s legendary run of G.I. Joe, with a team of Joes leading a desperate attack on Cobra Island, where despotic leader Serpentor plans to unleash a deadly mutant virus bomb.

The Snake Eyes seen in the preview with the rest of the Joes is also wearing the classic “commando” outfit of the original action figure, with a mask and goggles as opposed to the “ninja” look adopted by later versions. If this is the look the creative team has decided upon for the new series relaunch, it could prove controversial among fans who prefer the “Version 2” look that included a medieval knight-esque visor over the mask.

Of course, it’s also entirely possible that the Snake Eyes seen in the preview is Kamakura, and the original will show up later in the issue wearing the costume readers are more accustomed to seeing. Fans will have to wait until later this year to find out what’s going on with Snake Eyes when Larry Hama continues his classic run on G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.
