John Cena and Jackie Chan have teamed up for an action movie titled Snafu, which may not see the light of day. Recent years have seen the rise of movies and TV shows that get canceled even after they've finished filming. Probably the most notorious example is Batgirl, a DCU spinoff starring Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton. Despite finishing filming, Warner Bros decided it was essentially unreleasable and wrote down its budget as a tax write-off.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Another project that might be joining that list is Snafu, which was formerly titled Project X. The film was initially teased as the long-awaited team-up between Sylvester Stallone and Jackie Chan, who in the past circled other projects together like Demolition Man or The Expendables series. Sadly, Stallone ended up exiting the movie but was quickly replaced by John Cena.
To put that timeline into stark context, Cena hadn't even been cast as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad when Snafu wrapped. There could be many reasons for the radio silence on the film, though Cena's somewhat infamous PR disaster in 2021 - where he apologized for referring to Taiwan as a country during F9 promotions after this offended China - is one likely culprit.
Could Snafu Still Be Released? As shown with Batgirl, even a big-budget blockbuster with major stars can still get shelved. That said, there's still hope for Snafu - Cena's "Can't See Me" gags aside - though it's doubtful it will receive a wide theatrical push in North America at this point. Snafu does feel like the kind of action filler that would do big numbers on a platform like Netflix, which could be its best choice so many years after filming.
