A 14-year-old boy who police wanted to question about smoking was arrested after it was discovered he was carrying a gun in his waistband, according to Unified police.

MIDVALE — An investigation into possible smoking on school property led police to a bigger discovery on Monday.

About 11:30 a.m, a school resource officer who works for the Unified Police Department attempted to question a 14-year-old boy at Hillcrest High School, 7350 S. 900 East, about smoking on school property. But rather than go into the office to talk, as the officer had requested, the student began to run away, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler. It was during the scuffle that the officer discovered a gun in the teen's waistband, Cutler said.

Why the student had the gun remained under investigation Tuesday. Cutler said there had been no threats to the school or any students, and police do not believe anyone knew the boy had a gun until he got into the confrontation with the officer. The boy was arrested for investigation of weapons-related charges and transferred to Salt Lake Juvenile Detention.
