Was buying into and promoting Jack Easterby the worst decision the Houston Texans have ever made? Yes, writes sports columnist Brian T. Smith.

Jack Easterby, Houston Texans executive vice president, football operations, during training camp in 2021, is out.Jack Easterby was the most loathed Texan in franchise history, even though he never wore a uniform, threw a bad pass or blew a 24-0 lead to Kansas City in a playoff game.from the nasty, rotten ways of the Easterby era?

Texans Twitter united in celebration Monday morning as the McNairs finally did what should have been done years ago. Current GM Nick Caserio also got the professional distance he needed from an executive vice president of football operations who never had the Texans’ best interests at heart. He’d convinced someone new to write a puff piece proclaiming all of his invaluable talents — even though, on the record and with the tape rolling, a passive Easterby would always insist that he was just a tiny cog in the big machine known as life.

The oddest part of it all since 2019: The McNairs and the Texans brought it all on themselves. And they continued to publicly back Easterby … until they finally realized that they could do all the same things without him getting in the way.Easterby didn't make the call to promote O'Brien to HC and GM. Cal McNair did that and was one of Easterby’s biggest early champions.

The right time to erase the Easterby stench was Oct. 5, 2020, when O’Brien was fired because the McNairs had given far too much power to a false king who started a new season 0-4.
