Breaking: In what would be an enormous setback for Australia, Steve Smith could be ruled out of the the third Ashes Test after he was withdrawn from the final day at Lord's | ChrisBarrett_

Smith had returned to bat briefly on the previous afternoon after being struck on the neck by a bouncer from Jofra ArcherAustralia coach Justin Langer said he had resumed batting after passing a series of head injury assessments but after further tests on Sunday morning he was withdrawn from the match just before the fifth's day play began. The fact there is only a three-day break before the third Test starts in Leeds on Thursday leaves Smith in danger of having to sit out that match as well.

Steve Smith receiving treatment as he lies on the ground after being hit on the head by a ball bowled by England's Jofra Archer.“Steve has been closely monitored by medical staff overnight and this morning reported that after sleeping well, he woke with ‘a bit of a headache and a feeling of grogginess’,” said an Australia team spokesman.

“In terms of Steve’s availability for the third Test, this will be considered over the coming days but the short turnaround to the next Test is not in his favour. Steve’s fitness will be assessed on an ongoing basis. Steve will undergo a precautionary scan on his neck on Sunday.” The Ashes is the first international series in which concussion substitutes have been introduced after previously being brought into domestic cricket in Australia in 2016.“Despite the unfortunate nature of what has happened, the positive is that the concussion protocol, including the availability of the concussion substitute, which has been recently brought in has served its purpose,” the Australia spokesman said.
