The school girl wasn't seen again hours after CCTV footage captured her inside Carousel Bar
It's an image which could be seen at so many times and locations but instead of joy, it's one which preludes tragedy, loss, and a 20 year search for answers. The photo was released by Lancashire Constabulary as the search for missing Charlene Downes continued and the CCTV screengrab is the last known footage of her.
Over the hours that followed, the sisters went to visit Karen as she handed out leaflets in the town centre before Charlene met up with friends. She spent time with them before a small period where her movements are unknown and then met another friend before visiting a man at a takeaway and then heading to Carousel Bar on the North Pier.
Detective Chief Supt Pauline Stables, the Constabulary’s head of crime, said: “We have never given up on our quest to find out what happened to Charlene, and I know there are people out there who will have information which would help us. It’s 20 years since Charlene disappeared and people are older now and their loyalties, priorities and acquaintances may have changed and that allows them to think differently than you might have done previously.
