The rollout of the huge change begins today meaning millions of smart meters in homes across the UK may no longer operate properly.

As many as seven million energy customers across the UK have been issued a warning about a major change that could impact their smart meters.

A large percentage of these will require replacement as the older networks are switched off, reports the Mirror. In order for your smart meter to continue operating, you may need to replace the old SIM with a new one connecting to the 4G network. The switchover deadline that to move from 3G and 2G networks is in 2033. However, it remains unclear how the switchover will be implemented by energy suppliers - including whether or not they will take on the costs of upgrading and installing new meters in the homes of customers.

However, the PAC report has called for an updated assessment on whether or not smart meters deliver the anticipated energy bill savings.
