Toyota is using the Japan Mobility Show 2023 to demonstrate its newfound commitment to battery-electric vehicles and signal a dramatic shift from its first few half-hearted efforts. Unlike, which you might have forgotten about if you'd mastered its inscrutable name in the first place, Toyota's new EPU electric pickup truck concept strikes us as a potential hit in the U.S. After all, there are still waiting lists for the compact Ford Maverick and the fully electric Ford F-150 Lightning.
We expect it can also fold down in one piece like a conventional tailgate, but there appears to also be a closure panel like Rivian uses to cover the gap between the box and the tailgate.Given the relatively short hood and a bevel design that's sure to boost forward visibility, we'd be surprised if there's stowage under the Toyota EPU's hood for anything more than maybe the Level 1 charging cord.
