The report, which goes to the Mayors’ Council this week, states that claims SkyTrain is proprietary to SNC-Lavalin and Bombardier are false.

The technologies used to operate SkyTrain are not proprietary, and Metro Vancouver’s transit authority is not obligated to work with specific companies on future rapid transit projects, according to a new report from TransLink staff.

“The misperception out there that SkyTrain is proprietary technology to SNC-Lavalin and Bombardier is completely incorrect. Not true. Period. Stop,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. Other than the original fleet of vehicles, Bombardier has supplied all trains that run on the Expo and Millennium lines, because although procurement was open to competition, only Bombardier submitted a bid. Desmond said past orders were too small for other companies. The Canada Line uses different vehicles that were produced by Rotem.

Although TransLink owns the Canada Line, a consortium led by SNC-Lavalin and Serco was chosen to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the line, which opened in 2009, for 30 years. Desmond said TransLink staff have been trying to counter misinformation, and he hopes the report will clear up any confusion.
