The world\u0027s top curlers are ready for action at the world curling championships in Ottawa, anxious to perform before a curling\u002Dsavvy crowd.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back here to the worlds in Canada, with full crowds,” Edin said following his practice session on Friday. “It should be amazing. There’s obviously more tradition, curling-wise, in Canada. There will be bigger crowds here and just more media attention probably, as well.”

While final touch-ups were being made to TD Place Friday, each of the 13 teams had a one-hour block of practice time to test the four sheets before the event officially gets underway Saturday.“There was a little concern on our first sheet that it was pretty straight,” Gushue said. “But then, as we went through each sheet, there was progressively more curl, just breaking down the pebble. It showed that there’s lots of curl out there and it’s a good ice surface.

“In the first two days, we go through the meat grinder and then have the rest of the week to play,” Gushue said. “It’s a tough start for us, but hopefully we can get off to a decent start and not put ourselves behind the eight-ball.”
