“People across the country and all over the world are seeing what Nova Scotia has to offer. They want to come to Nova Scotia, build their careers, lay down roots, and thrive here.”Suzy Hansen, the NDP representative for Halifax Needham, said the Nova Scotia housing crisis is not a secret. “We have a campaign right now that is specifically targeting skilled-trade workers and health-care workers,” the deputy minister said. “That campaign is now in its second phase and it’s been very, very successful.
“We’re working closely with our partners, including the Nova Scotia Community College and others, to really get the message out that there is work in communities across Nova Scotia in the skilled trades. By having more people see skilled trades as an option, having more people deciding that they want to stay here, that they don’t need to leave to work in the skilled trades.”
Bureaux said some construction programs at NSCC with high industry demand are not full while others with less industry demand see interest outweighing capacity, resulting in wait lists. Gary Burrill, the NDP representative for Halifax-Chebucto, asked if the college considered free tuition or lower tuition to attract students.
Braedon Clark, the Liberal MLA for Bedford South, asked Peter Hacket, the deputy minister of the Public Works Department, about an estimated cost for the massive QEII hospital revitalization project and if a skilled labour shortage would affect the project going forward.
