Six people were killed Wednesday when a car crashed into a work zone on Interstate 695 in Baltimore County and struck multiple construction workers.
The crash near Woodlawn on the Baltimore Beltway left the driver hospitalized, authorities said. It occurred around 12:41 p.m. on the Inner Loop before Exit 17 to Security Boulevard.
Maryland State Police said that six people were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.In a tweet, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski offered condolences to the victims. Maryland State Police have not yet identified the driver of the gray Acura, nor what caused him to enter the construction zone.
The crash and resulting police activity had shut down all lanes and both shoulders of I-695 on the Inner and Outer Loops between Liberty Road and Security Boulevard.
