Voters will be deciding the future of education in Utah County as a new proposed school district will be on the ballot in November.

Six cities, six votes, and they all ended the same way, unanimously. It's the product of an interlocal agreement between Alpine, Lehi, American Fork, Cedar Hills, Highland, and part of Draper.

Tuesday’s vote came after a financial feasibility study and a 45-day public comment period with 12 public hearings. Now voters will be able to decide if they want the new school district — and if they do, it won’t be open until 2027. “November 2025 is when new school board members will be elected, and they would continue the process,” Newall said. “Alpine School District would still exist and be operating during that time, but they’d be in a transition period.”For it to pass, a majority of voters in all six cities will need to vote for it.

“I think it’s just really important, moving forward, for residents to study this out,” Newall said. “This is probably one of the biggest decisions that they’re going to make in their lifetime that they can vote on.” The feasibility study that was done found that the new district could provide more local control and tax savings to those six cities.
