Prince Harry claimed he has experienced “hostility from the press since I was born” as he made a landmark appearance in the High Court as part of his hacking case against the publisher of the Daily Mirror AlannahFrancis1 reports
He alleges that Mirror Group Newspapers used methods including phone hacking to publish 140 stories about his private life from 1996 to 2010, and said in court that this alleged behaviour is “utterly vile” and “led to bouts of depression and paranoia”.
He was also unable to confirm to the court when he first became aware of individual articles but maintained they caused distress because of how they had affected his life later on. But Mr Green suggested the duke didn’t have mobile phone until 1998, so phone-hacking could not have taken place in relation to one of the articles in Harry’s claim, titled“This article could not have involved any journalist hacking your mobile phone could it?” the lawyer said. The duke said his security at school had a separate room with a land line – and his complaint about the 1996 article is that it is inexplicable how the newspaper got the information.
Referring to details of an article in his claim, Mr Green said: “It had been reported in the press.” Prince Harry retorted: “Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true.” At one point in response to a question over whose phone he believed was hacked to gather information for a particular story, Prince Harry suggested the journalist may have personally hacked his phone or “got someone else to do the dirty work”.
The duke said that he understands a story appearing in one publication would only encourage others to take it further.
