Reaction officers found four people who had already succumbed to their injuries in the mangled wreckage of a silver Ford Bantam bakkie.
Six people were confirmed dead and another six were in a critical condition following a head-on collision between a truck and bakkie at Umdloti Beach Road close to Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa , paramedics were called out to the scene shortly before 3pm. In a statement, Rusa said paramedics from several private services assisted in stabilizing several critically injured patients.According to the driver of a black and blue Mercedes-Benz truck, the fully laden bakkie was traveling towards Verulam when the driver drove into the oncoming lane while reaching for an unknown item in the vehicle.
A witness informed officers at the scene that the bakkie involved in the accident, had stopped a few minutes earlier and picked up hitchhikers. Motorists using the Umdloti Beach Road to Verulam or Waterloo are requested to use alternate routes for the next few hours.
