SIU unravels alleged money laundering and graft in National Lottery Commission
Speaking to MPs, chief investigator Leonard Lekgetho said: “The investigation found that an identity of a nonprofit organisation [NPO] was hijacked and R23 000 000 was paid to the NPO. The purpose of the grant was to build an old age home in Mpumalanga. The project was started but not completed, as funds allocated to the project were redirected to individuals connected to the NLC.”
According to the findings, money was laundered through NPOs that applied for grant funding. These NPOs were linked to senior officials. The money was supposed to be used to build drug rehabilitation centres. The only work that they did was to refurbish and build extra structures to an existing drug rehabilitation centre.
