The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in South Africa is pursuing legal action abroad to recover Denel's intellectual property (IP) on missiles, alleging collusion with a Dubai-based defense company.

The South African Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is determined to reclaim Denel 's stolen intellectual property (IP) on missile technology, even if it means pursuing legal action in Dubai. The SIU revealed to Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) that it suspects former Denel officials colluded with a Dubai-based defense company, Tawazun , transferring Denel 's missile development IP in a 2012 joint venture.

The SIU is now considering criminal charges against seven individuals involved in this alleged scheme.ActionSA's Alan Beesley expressed deep concern over the extent of corruption at Denel, stating that the R9 billion in bailouts the company has received over the years appear to have been wasted. He likened the situation to a James Bond novel, acknowledging the complexity of recovering stolen IP.SIU head Andy Mothibi confirmed the challenge of retrieving the IP, highlighting the need to utilize the South African government's mutual legal assistance agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Mothibi emphasized that this case will be a test case for international collaborations in intellectual property theft recovery. He also hinted at possible action against Denel's former board for failing to fulfill their fiduciary duties
