Two sisters have joined forces to set up a Community Fridge in Darwen, helping families that may be struggling due to the cost of living crisis
Fiona Mcnamee, who lives in Darwen, came up with the idea due to her hatred for food waste. As a result, she decided to team up with her sister, Sarah Bernasconi-Parsons and the pair have made the dream a reality.
"It's a general problem anywhere, but in East Lancashire, there's a lot of teen pregnancies and numbers of people with heart disease and that die younger, as well as people on minimum wage. This is the same for any poorer area, but places like Blackburn, Burnley and Bolton already have their own community fridges.
"When there's damaged stock in a shop, supermarkets have to bin them but people need it and it's really an idea to bridge that gap." The Community Fridge is also set up in honour of Maggie's Legacy, the story behind Sarah's tireless fundraising after a tragedy her and her husband experienced. "My sister came to me with the idea for the Community Fridge, she lives in Darwen and said there's a massive need for the working people there, as there's nothing in the area. It's all voluntary and any profits we make goes straight back into it.
