SIRT1: Unlocking the secrets to better vascular health through resveratrol and energy restriction SIRT1 VascularHealth Resveratrol EnergyRestriction Longevity Cardiometabolic HealthyAging Nutrients_MDPI
By Dr. Priyom Bose, Ph.D.Jul 3 2023Reviewed by Benedette Cuffari, M.Sc. Sirtuins are proteins that regulate many cellular processes including mitochondrial function and genome integrity. In mammals, SIRT1-SIRT7 have been discovered, among which SIRT1 is the most extensively studied.
Vascular reactivity parameters are used to assess endothelial function. For example, nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilation and flow-mediated dilation are non-invasive techniques based on vascular reactivity parameters that are extremely useful for predicting cardiometabolic events in high-risk populations.
Animal studies have shown that SIRT is associated with longevity. SIRT1 is an nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase that possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. In vitro experimental studies have demonstrated sympatholytic effects of SIRT1, along with improved cardiovascular function.
In this trial, 48 healthy individuals were recruited to analyze the effects of 500 mg/day resveratrol supplementation and energy restriction of 1,000 kcal/day for 30 days on vascular reactivity parameters and SIRT1. Study findings The current study revealed that 30 days of energy restriction and 500 mg/day of resveratrol supplementation increased circulating SIRT1 and reduced plasma NA levels.

Research shows older frail patients have a 1 in 3 chance of surviving CPR during surgeryIt's estimated that around 25% of patients who have a cardiac arrest and receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a normal hospital setting will survive. Those odds shoot up to 50% for patients who receive CPR during or in the immediate period following surgery, where they are closely monitored by specialists who know their medical history and can intervene without delay. But it's unclear whether that trend applies to frail patients, who are often older and at a higher risk of experiencing CPR-related trauma and complications.
