A new campaign has been launched to help older people with tech skills and spotting scams

Football hero Sir Geoff Hurst, 82, is tackling online scammers, working with BT Group and AbilityNet to help raise awareness of online scams among older people. They are offering over 65s the chance to improve their digital skills through free training courses.

“For example I got a text message yesterday saying that my TV licence has expired, click here to pay it. I’ve had this one before and I looked at my TV Licence and knew it was in date, so figured it must be a scam. As part of the campaign Sir Geoff appears in a new video making a surprise visit to players from Bristol’s walking football club for older players. Sir Geoff added: “People my age can get so sucked in by those emails. And it just comes down to lack of experience.

In the first half of 2023 scammers were responsible for nearly 1.4m cases of fraud in the UK – the equivalent of one every 12 seconds.
