Sir Alex Ferguson would advise Premier League bosses to steer clear of splashing out on eye-catching players at Euro 2024 .
“One thing you don’t do - and this is not me, this is Sir Alex when I spoke to him at his height at Manchester United - never buy a player after an international competition,” Allardyce told his No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. “Because they normally let you down more than anybody else. In the post-Ferguson era, United paid a world-record fee for Paul Pogba, shortly after he had helped guide France to the Euro 2016 final, though he already had a connection to the club. Despite Ferguson’s apparent reluctance, the iconic manager arguably made some of his best signings after international tournaments.
