RYK VAN NIEKERK: A consortium under the leadership of former Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko is vying to acquire a 35% stake in Telkom. It started to engage with the telecommunications company in March this year, but the Telkom board formally rejected the offer on Friday [7 July 2023].

Absolutely. Number one, Axian’s past is almost similar to Telkom’s in the sense that the first asset they acquired and operated was the national telephone operator in Madagascar. Now they’re in about nine markets on the mobile side. They have been able to show tremendous growth over the period in the nine markets that they have. They have a structurally separated tower business, structurally separated fibre and data centres.

[Laughing] You and I are at the moment in discussion, as it were. If you had sent an email and I responded to that email equally in writing, I don’t think that would’ve qualified as a ‘discussion’. We certainly did not have what you and I are having now, which is a discussion – certainly not. RYK VAN NIEKERK: When there are these big offers placed on a table, especially for a big company or a relatively big company like Telkom, sometimes egos also come into play.
