Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, who is in dispute with Fortis B.C. over the Como Lake pipeline replacement, has posted on Facebook, calling the disruption an enormous challenge for residents.
Coquitlam is advising motorists that Como Lake Avenue is closed to all westbound traffic because of a sinkhole caused by Fortis B.C. construction.
The road is a major east-west arterial through Coquitlam and the closure presents “enormous” challenges for residents, particularly as there are two elementary schools and a middle school along the corridor, said Stewart, who has been embroiled in a heated dispute with Fortis over laying new pipeline under Como Lake Avenue.
The city contends the ground beneath Como Lake Avenue is a huge mess of pipes and wires. Stewart has said that once Fortis lays the new pipe — which started in March and is expected to end in August — there will be no room left to install or expand utilities in the future.
