Simple 'bellows' method cools car down quicker than turning on air con

Getting into a scorching car on warm days can be unbearable but one method can cool it down fast

The recent hot weather is set to continue with warm temperatures forecast for the rest of this week. And while most of us are relishing the mercury rising, drivers will know trying to cool the car down quickly can be a battle.

And if your vehicle has been sat in the sunshine all day long it can be like climbing into a furnace. Experts have warned motorists that they shouldn't blast the air conditioning the minute they step into the car as the system will have to battle super heated air and has to work far harder to cool down the vehicle. In fact, there is a simple way to cool down your car and it will work faster than using the air con on hot days. If the temperature outside is 24C, the interior of the vehicle can reach 38C within ten minutes if sat in direct sunshine. Experts at Car Finance Claims UK said that using a simple 'bellows' method when you enter the car will cool it down in half time of the air conditioning, which burns fuel to use, and it is free to do too. Tom Riley, Director at Car Finance Claims UK , said: 'Most drivers simply blast the air conditioning when entering a hot car, but this wastes fuel and takes longer than necessary to become comfortable, especially during these unprecedented early heatwaves we're experiencing across Britain.' The 'bellows effect' technique uses basic physics to rapidly expel hot air and can quickly cool down a car's interior temperature without using any fuel. Creating maximum airflow pathways is crucial for the technique to work effectively. 'The first step is opening all windows fully to create escape routes for the hot air,' explained Riley. 'This immediate ventilation starts the cooling process before you even attempt the bellows motion.' Opening and closing the door several times creates a powerful air circulation effect. Riley advised: 'Open and close your driver's door about 5-6 times in quick succession. This pumping action forces hot air out while drawing cooler outside air in - much like how bellows work for a fireplace, hence the name.' The sequence of closing windows affects how efficiently cool air is drawn into the vehicle. 'After door pumping, close the front windows first while keeping rear windows open for another 30 seconds,' recommended Riley. 'This creates a pressure differential that continues to pull hot air out through the back while drawing fresh air in through the front dashboard vents.' Optimising vent direction enhances the cooling effect once air conditioning is activated. Riley commented: 'Point your air con vents upward initially to force hot air down and out, then redirect them toward passengers once the initial cooling has occurred. 'This simple adjustment can reduce the time needed to reach a comfortable level massively.' Preventing heat buildup is easier than removing it once established. 'Don't underestimate reflective windscreen shades,' said Riley. 'Combine this with the bellows technique when returning to your car for the most effective cooling strategy as Britain faces increasingly warm summers, with May's record temperatures potentially signalling an exceptionally hot season ahead.'
