Time to almost determine who stays, who goes, who loses jobs, and who doesn’t, and when the Leafs score two goals for the third straight time.
Out West, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have combined for eight goals in two games against Vegas, one a win, one a loss. The scoreless four — all $40 million worth of them — haven’t been good enough at any time in this series. This is playoff time. This is when the stars come out to play. And Sunday night, was about as weak a game as Marner has played as a Leaf. At least, Matthews on occasion got a little bit done, same with Nylander. Not a lot from Tavares but more than came from Marner.
Not on a night when the Leafs were desperate and then they weren’t, and then they were, and in overtime they were very tight, icing the puck three times in the first 90 seconds. And not long after that Sam Reinhart left TJ Brodie standing still behind the Toronto goal, and did a wrap-around that beat Woll, who had replaced Ilya Samsonov early in the first period, with the Leafs leading 1-0.
Does Brendan Shanahan, the big boss man of the Maple Leafs, survive another solid regular season, followed by another unimpressive playoff run? And not when you consider the history of this team — all these years without a Stanley Cup. But along the way, in those disappointing seasons, you still had Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark doing crazy things, you still had Darryl Sittler and Lanny McDonald putting on giant performances, and you still had Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts playing huge.
