Proposed legislation would establish a system similar to Amber Alerts to notify the public of missing elderly people.
Harrisburg police say having a Silver Alert system in place in Pennsylvania could have helped them locate Donald "Freddy" Harris, 58, who according to his daughter, has not been seen or heard from since July 16, 2022. When an elderly person with a cognitive impairment goes missing, the early hours of their disappearance can be hectic for law enforcement and terrifying for their family — and crucial to the missing person’s survival.
This is a big concern for Pennsylvania, a state with a large and growing older population and rural areas that get very hot in the summer and cold in the winter, said Teresa Osborne, the state advocacy director for AARP Pennsylvania. But 27 other states use a Silver Alert system which communicates to the public directly using text messages and sometimes road signs.
