Founder Chike Nwoffiah says this weekend’s festival serves as “an invitation to see, to touch, to encounter Africa differently.”
The Silicon Valley African Film Festival will feature more than 100 movies from 33 countries this weekend at the Historic Hoover Theatre in San Jose. But founder Chike Nwoffiah says the event, now in its 13th year, is about a lot more than movies.
Screenings begin Friday at 2 p.m. before the official red carpet arrivals and opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m., with a parade of flags and a conversation with filmmaker Jimmy Jean-Louis, who will receive the festival’s Culture Icon Award. “I’m truly humbled and for what it represents,” said Nwoffiah, who is originally from Nigeria. “Everything I’ve always done has been carrying the identity of my people with me. Being in Silicon Valley, oftentimes, because of numbers and whatever else, we are often not seen and recognized. Just to receive that call is very affirming. You feel seen, you feel affirmed, you feel you belong.”
