“I feel a sense of pride [for being recognised]. This feels like a huge acknowledgment of the work I do – creating accessibility and inclusive platforms for the deaf community. It’s a proud moment to represent the country and the language practitioners to show that it is possible to achieve anything if you work hard and are passionate about what you do.”

The award will be a permanent recognition of what we strive for at Yellow Owl. We take big risks in terms of collaborating with creatives, brands and campaigns. Asked what inspired her to follow a career as a sign language interpreter, Zikalala said it was curiosity. She said it was not easy, especially after the embarrassing episode of the unqualified sign language interpreter at former president Nelson Mandela’s memorial service a few years ago. The incident felt like a slap in the face for language professionals and the deaf community.

Zikalala added that their SASL podcast Signs and Stories was another powerful platform to share storytelling from the deaf community’s perspective.
