A week after Sibanye-Stillwater finally settled with Amcu and ended the second-longest strike in history of mining in SA, chief executive Neal Froneman says: “I feel we have made our point and any union will think twice about calling a strike with Sibanye”

Sibanye-Stillwater chief executive Neal Froneman is not a man who wastes words. He articulates issues with precision and volunteers few details unless asked.

“It was important to differentiate between the strike and making sure there was no violence,” Froneman said, adding that the company even stopped night shifts to minimise risks. Asked if he had ever lost at the negotiating table against a union, Froneman confirmed he had yet to. “It is not my intention to break unions and no, I don’t think I have [lost to a union],” he said.

Among the many accusations against the company during the strike was alleged collusion with the police, an issue Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said was demonstrated by police vehicles being repaired at the mine’s workshops. “We stayed above that. Our focus was on the facts and we did not make personal comments. I think going forward, in terms of being constructive, that shouldn’t happen again. I will speak to him [Mathunjwa] about it now that the dust has settled,” he said.

Asked if he thought the union had a particular dislike towards him and his company, Froneman said Sibanye was the only company that had stood up to Amcu.
