Shuttered Rosscarrock school gets temporary lease on life from Calgary Arts Academy yyc yycbe abed
Calgary Board of Education trustees voted to shut Rosscarrock School in January of 2021 due to low enrolment. CAA has signed a two-year lease on the building. Under the province’s charter system, Alberta Education can direct public boards to lease their underutilized buildings to charter schools, with the public board remaining as caretaker.Article content Katherine Stavropoulos, press secretary to the education minister, said the CBE had made a request to sell the land in Rosscarrock before Alberta Education determined the school could be used by the CAA.
Erickson said CBE replaced broken windows in the building, fixed some holes in the walls and removed graffiti. CAA used its per-student grants for plant operation to pay for other costs, such as paint and new flooring. He said for at least the next two years, Rosscarrock will be CAA’s middle school, serving students in grades 4 to 9. There are now more than 200 students and 14 teachers and staff in the building.“The community association has been very supportive and are thrilled — I think — that Calgary Arts Academy is there, and we are thrilled to be part of their community,” he said. “It’s been great.
