Claude Giroux scored two goals to lead the offence and Anton Forsberg was perfect in net on Saturday night.
Goaltender Anton Forsberg made 28 stops for his second shutout of the National Hockey League season as the Senators extended their winning streak to three games. Alternate captain Claude Giroux scored two goals and had an assist.
Coming off a 6-2 victory over the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Friday, the Senators were looking to pick up right where they left off. There’s nothing like picking up points against your two biggest rivals in the Atlantic Division and sending those wearing Habs’ jerseys in the Ottawa rink home disappointed.
The decision to go back to Forsberg in net was hardly a surprise as he was the only option with Cam Talbot nursing what’s believed to be a groin injury. It’s rare for a goalie to start on back-to-back nights these days, but that game in Toronto hadn’t been overly taxing. Giroux’s second goal of the game gave the Senators a three-goal lead, but his 19th of the year also came with a bit of luck. Trying to throw the puck to Ridly Greig in front, Giroux had his pass bounce off the skate of Montreal’s Arber Xhekaj and behind Montembeault at 9:32 of the second.
The Senators and Habs played to a scoreless tie in the first, but there was no shortage of opportunities. Ottawa outshot Montreal 10-8, but Forsberg had the tougher stops to make and the Habs missed a couple of glorious opportunities.
