Giants head coach Pat Shurmur left the door open for a potential quarterback switch from longtime starter Eli Manning. Here's why that's a good thing.
Share to twitterEAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - DECEMBER 30: Eli Manning #10 of the New York Giants in action against the Dallas Cowboys on December 30, 2018 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Cowboys defeated the Giants 36-35.There seems to be a growing fantasy that the Giants are planning to stage an old-fashioned knock-down, drag-out quarterback competition between incumbent Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones, with the winner to be named the starting quarterback.
Shurmur, who like Gettleman has already declared that Manning will be the starter, has not changed his stance even after the team plucked Jones out of Duke with the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft. “I know we’re dancing around the words here, but right now, Eli is getting ready to have a great year, and Daniel is getting ready to play. We’ll see what happens.”
Those “things” include a veteran offensive line that, according to Pro Football Focus, excels in pass blocking; a potential “gold jacket” running back who is the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year, and a mixture of receiving options that, while no longer including Odell Beckham Jr, still has enough versatility and firepower to make some noise.
“The players that give our team the best chance to win play. Period,” he said. “We’ve seen Eli do that for a long time. We’ll see what happens as we go down the road. You never know what’s going to happen.” While Shurmur could have easily said that Manning is the starter regardless of what happens (injuries aside, he’s created a healthy quarterback competition whereby Manning isn’t necessarily competing with Jones for the right to retain the starting job, but rather with himself.
