Showmax, a South African streaming platform, is adapting the popular American comedy series Superstore for a local audience. Production is set to begin this year, marking Showmax's second foray into comedy format adaptations after licensing The Office from the BBC. The local version will be produced by Barkers Media and Universal International Studios.

“The Showmax Original will be produced locally by Barkers Media in association with Universal International Studios. Production is expected to start this year,” the streaming platform confirmed in release to Hypertext.isode of Superstore and can’t wait to see how the funny and loveable characters are reimagined in our complex country,” enthused Nicola van Niekerk, executive head of programming at MultiChoice.

Interestingly, exactly 10 years ago on 14th January 2015, NBC picked up the pilot for Superstore, which would go on to garner more than six million viewers an episode over its run of six seasons. At the time of writing, it has not been detailed when the local version of the comedy series will be headed to Showmax, but it is clear that along with South African original programming, the streaming platform wants to add internationally acclaimed shows with our own flavour to the mix too.Editor of Hypertext.
